eSIM or SIM Card for Spain: What to Buy Before You Fly

This post contains affiliate links. If you book through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

If your SIM is from an EU country, you need nothing: Spain costs you the same as home. Most O2 customers need nothing either. But EE, Vodafone and Three customers on plans without roaming built in pay a daily charge, and US carriers charge a daily pass, so for a week or more a data eSIM bought before you fly is usually cheaper.

    At a glance

    • Nothing to buy: EU and EEA SIMs, and most O2 plans, roam in Spain at no extra cost.
    • A week on the daily rate: £56 on Three at £8 a day, 84 USD on Verizon TravelPass.
    • A week on an eSIM: a 10GB Yesim plan was 16€ on 20 October 2026, valid 30 days.

Do I need an eSIM for Spain?

Find your row. Everything below the table is the detail behind it.

Your SIM What Spain costs on your own plan What to do

What UK networks charge in Spain

    • O2: Spain sits in the Europe Zone and comes out of your UK allowance at no extra cost, capped at 25GB if your allowance is bigger. Over 63 days abroad in four months counts as unfair use and data then costs £3.50 per GB (o2.co.uk, read October 2026).
    • Three: if your plan has no roaming built in, it is £7 a day for plans taken between 1 October 2021 and 17 December 2025, £8 a day from 18 December 2025. Plans from 22 June 2025 with roaming built in just use your allowance. Go Roam passes cost £5 for 3 days, £12 for 7 and £24 for 14, with a 12GB monthly fair-use limit.
    • Vodafone: Spain is Zone B. Euro Roam plans include it; others pay a daily charge or add an Extra. The Roaming Charge Checker gives your own rate from your number.
    • EE: a daily fee on most Pay Monthly plans started on or after 7 July 2021, or a Roam Abroad Pass that replaces it for 30 days. Text ROAM to 150 for your price.

Check your own rate in your network’s app before you fly, not at the baggage belt in Alicante.

Local tip: The daily charge bills for any day the phone touches data, and a phone left on roaming checks email at 7am by itself while you sleep. That is how a fortnight on the Costa Blanca turns into a three-figure bill.

    What US carriers charge

Verizon TravelPass is 12 USD a day, billed only on days you use the phone abroad, with unlimited talk and text and 5GB of high-speed data per session before it slows. Unlimited Ultimate includes international use instead. AT&T sells a similar International Day Pass, and some T-Mobile plans include basic data abroad. Both depend on your exact plan, so check yours in the app rather than trusting the brochure.

    What an eSIM costs instead

Here is the arithmetic, dated October 2026. A week on Three’s £8 daily charge is £56. A week of Verizon TravelPass is 84 USD. A 10GB Yesim plan for Spain was 16€ on 20 October 2026, and it lasts 30 days, not seven.

Yesim Spain plan Price, October 2026
    1 day 3.50€
    1GB, 30 days 2.50€
    5GB, 30 days 9.60€
    10GB, 30 days 16€
    20GB, 30 days 22€
    30GB, 30 days 28€

Those were discounted promotional prices and they move, so check Yesim’s Spain page before buying. Unlimited plans exist too, with a fair-usage policy. One thing to be clear about: these are data only. You keep your own SIM in the phone for calls and texts, and WhatsApp and FaceTime run over the eSIM’s data like they do at home. Coverage is the same across the mainland, the Balearics and the Canaries.

How much data a week actually needs

Maps, messages, email and a scroll through social media fit into a few GB over a week. What eats data is video: Netflix on the balcony, YouTube by the pool, or tethering a laptop. Most beach weeks land somewhere between 5 and 10GB. Nobody needs 30GB for a fortnight in Benidorm unless they stream.

Will it work on my phone, and how do I set it up

The phone has to support eSIM and be unlocked from the network that sold it. Most iPhones from the XS onwards and recent Android flagships qualify, and US iPhones from the 14 have no SIM tray at all. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, label it, then set it as your data line when you land.

The one mistake that costs money: turn off data roaming on your home line once the eSIM is doing the work. Leave it on and the phone can still drift back to your home SIM and trigger the daily charge you paid to avoid.

Should I buy a Spanish SIM card instead?

Spanish law requires every prepaid SIM to be registered to its buyer, so bring your passport and expect the shop to copy it. Official Vodafone, Orange, Movistar, Yoigo and MásMóvil shops in town are cheaper than the airport kiosks. It is worth the trip for a stay of several weeks, or when you need a Spanish number for a restaurant that calls back or a delivery driver.

Local tip: People living here do not buy SIMs at the airport. The shops in town cost less and the queue is shorter. For a one-week holiday, though, the eSIM beats both: no queue, no passport photocopy, no tray pin.

Is hotel and café Wi-Fi enough?

Wi-Fi in Spain is everywhere and usually fast: hotels, cafés, beach bars, airports, and PlayRenfe on the AVE, Avlo and most long-distance trains. Speed is not the problem. The problem is that every one of those networks is shared with strangers, the hotel’s included.

That is where a VPN such as NordVPN earns its keep: it keeps banking, booking logins and work accounts private on a network you do not control, and it keeps the streaming and banking apps you already pay for at home working while you are away. For everything else that can go wrong on holiday, Is Spain safe? An honest answer covers it.

    Common questions

Can I keep my WhatsApp number with an eSIM?

Yes. WhatsApp stays tied to your home number, not to the data line. Keep your usual SIM in the phone with data roaming switched off, and WhatsApp calls and messages run over the eSIM’s data as normal.

Can I hotspot a laptop from an eSIM?

Usually, but it depends on the local network the eSIM uses, so treat it as a bonus rather than a plan. If you are working from the apartment, buy a bigger data plan than you think you need: a laptop gets through data far faster than a phone.

Does an eSIM work on a ferry or a cruise?

Only while you are close to the coast and still picking up a land mast. Out at sea the phone falls back to the ship’s satellite network, which is billed separately and is expensive. Switch off data roaming before you sail.

    Plan your trip to Spain

    • Trip.com: A great source for finding flights and airport connections. I have noticed that it finds flight connections that some other search engines miss.
    • Booking.com: My favourite site for booking hotels and apartments (and occasionally flights). They have the best filters and I like the user friendly interface.
    • Hotels.com: The most popular hotel booking platform in many countries, US included.
    • Get Your Guide: A massive selection of tours and excursions. They have tons of options available in Spain, including walking tours, cooking classes, museum options, boat tours and more!
    • DiscoverCars: Want to explore charming villages and get out of the busy cities? DiscoverCars pools together the best offers from car rental operators for your convenience.
    • Omio: Want to find the best option to move between cities in Spain? I use Omio for that. Plus you get to book the ticket from the same amazing platform.
    • yesim: Need a local SIM card for your trip to Spain? A stress free holiday nowadays (unfortunately) might start from a good connection, so get an eSIM with unlimited or prepaid data.
    • NordVPN: Hotel, café and airport Wi-Fi in Spain is shared with everyone else on it. A VPN keeps your banking and bookings private, and lets you watch the services you already subscribe to at home while you are away.
    • VisitorCoverage: Not interested in checking out Spanish public health care system on your holiday? (like I've managed to do..) A cheap travel insurance gets that stress out of the way.
